Fruit Cultivation History of Hokkaido

Traditional Hokkaido "Apples"

On 1872, Mr. Garutner from Germany opened a farm at actual Nanae cho and planted apples, pears, grapes etc. which was the beginning of apple plantation in Hokkaido.

The full-scale introduction of fruits plantation was the 1878. The development commissioners imported saplings of 75 different types from USA. Among the saplings, “Kunimitsu”, “Kougyoku”, “Iwai” etc. that became base variety of Japan which is established the base of production.

After that, the introduced saplings are firmly fixed steady at clime and climate of Hokkaido. They have made efforts such as a constant improvement and development of new varieties. The varieties that is currently being produced are over than 30 types.

The temperature difference at day and night helps make apples get colored, tightly plumped, and highly storageble.

"Pears" with oldest history

The beginning of pear cultivation in Hokkaido is quite old, and there are records that were planted in the Ichiwatari village (actual Ono cho) during the Kyoho year (from 1716 to 1736) of the Edo Period.

This pear is the original variety of Japan, the first cultivation of occidental pears was in the Nanae cho on the 1872 same as the apples brought by Mr. Garutner from Germany.

After this, the development commissioners imported saplings of 53 varieties as “Bartlett” and “Brandy wine” from USA. Currently there were 15 varieties are planted including there are 2 types and there is increasing the occidental pears with special flesh and the aroma.

The cultivation surface of "Cherry" at Hokkaido is the 2nd place.

It is said that the land of origin of cherry (Outou) is a large region from China to south east Europe.

The beginning of the cultivation in Hokkaido is same as apples and pears that Mr Garutner from Germany cultivated saplings at Nana echo. After that the developed commissioners introduced 25 varieties commencing with “Napoleon”, “Takasago”, and “Hinode”. From then on the Hokkaido people have got familiar with them.

The evaluation of Hokkaido cherry at the market is high because of less fruit cracking, and the cultivation surface has been increased.

The typical varieties are “Sato Nishiki”, “Kitahikari(Suimon)” and “Nanyo” that is large fruits and good eating quality.
